About Us
The Mental Health Act Review Board is an independent quasi-judicial board established under the Mental Health Act.
Mandate
The Mental Health Act Review Board’s (MHARB) role is to protect the rights of people who are involuntarily held under the Mental Health Act.
The MHARB ensures individuals in the Northwest Territories are able to request a review of their circumstances if they are held involuntarily under the Mental Health Act.
MHARB provides an objective, timely, and fair process to review a person or patient’s detention and loss of freedoms under the Act.
The MHARB is required to maintain an “arms-length” relationship from government. Decisions made by the MHARB are independent of the government, health service providers, and designated facilities.
